A studio maternity session in the Exchange District

There is something incredibly special about photographing someone on the edge of a brand-new chapter. Pregnancy is filled with anticipation, excitement, and so many unknowns, and it deserves to be remembered just as much as the day your baby arrives.

Last July, I had the joy of photographing Rylin-Rae as she prepared to welcome her very first baby, a sweet little boy. We met in my natural light studio in Winnipeg's historic Exchange District, where we spent the morning documenting this exciting season of her life with two simple outfit changes and plenty of laughter.

From the moment she walked into the studio, Rylin-Rae made the session feel effortless. She embraced every moment, trusted the process, and wasn't afraid to laugh along the way. We had so much to talk about, and I was freshly 3 months postpartum, so there was plenty to chat about because we were in similar seasons of our lives. Those are often my favourite sessions: the ones where we simply slow down, chat, and create photographs that feel honest and true.

One of the things I love most about studio maternity sessions is how timeless they are. Without distractions, the focus stays exactly where it belongs: on you, your growing family, and the incredible journey your body is taking. Whether it's your first baby or your fourth, this chapter passes far more quickly than it feels in the moment.

I know it can be easy to put yourself last while preparing for a baby. There are nurseries to finish, hospital bags to pack, and endless to-do lists. But I truly believe you deserve to pause for just a couple of hours and celebrate yourself before everything changes.

Maternity photography isn't just about documenting a bump. It's about remembering how you felt while waiting to meet the little person who would soon change your world forever. Years from now, these photographs become part of your family's story: not only for you, but for your child to look back on one day and see just how loved they were before they were even born.

One of my favourite parts of this story is that it didn't end here. A few months later, I had the privilege of welcoming Rylin-Rae back into my studio—this time with her beautiful newborn son in her arms. Watching families grow and being invited back to document these milestones is one of the greatest honours of my job. Seeing her transition from expectant mother to confident new mom made these two sessions even more meaningful.

If you've been thinking about booking maternity photos but keep wondering if you should wait or skip them altogether, consider this your reminder: you deserve to exist in these memories too. Your pregnancy is part of your family's story, and it deserves to be documented with the same love and care as every milestone that follows.

If you're looking for a Winnipeg maternity photographer who focuses on natural, relaxed, and storytelling imagery, I'd love to help you preserve this season before your little one arrives. My studio in the Exchange District offers a calm, comfortable space where you can simply be present and celebrate this incredible chapter of your life.
